Lot Description

[Fine Bindings] [Bennett] Irving, Washington The Alhambra

London and New York: Macmillan, 1896. First and limited edition thus, one of 500 copies printed. 4to. 436 pp. Profusely illustrated in black and white by Joseph Pennell. Bound in three-quarter burgundy crushed niger over linen-covered boards, spine elaborately gilt; top edge gilt, other edges trimmed; marbled endpapers; by Bennett. Title-page browned from frontispiece tissue guard, otherwise a fine copy.

A lovely example from The Bennett Book Studios, a fine book bindery in New York City established in the late 1920s by bookman and binder Whitman Bennett (1884-1968).

From the library of bibliophile and long-standing Grolier Club member David Allen Fraser (1911-2003).
