Presentation copy of the ninth edition, inscribed by Hawker to his friend, English water-colorist, optical instrument maker, and designer of the volume's frontispiece, Cornelius Varley, "To/Cornelius Varley Esq./with the author's/kind regards,/& thanks for his/able exertions." Each volume illustrated with engraved frontispiece, plates, and in-text illustrations; some plates hand-colored. Variously colored three-quarter morocco over cloth-covered boards, some top edges gilt, other edges trimmed; condition varies, generally very good to near-fine; front boards starting on fifth and eighth edition; contemporary ownership signature on title-page of eleventh volume; book-plate of Raymond L.J.
