[Americana] Franklin, Benjamin The Way to Wealth or Poor Richard Improved

Paris: Printed for Ant. Aug. Renouard, 1795. 16mo. (iv), 181, (5), 28 pp; without ads found in some copies. Printed in French and in English. Illustrated with an engraved portrait frontispiece of Franklin, after Dupleiss by A. Tardieu. Full contemporary green calf, stamped in gilt, red morocco spine label, rebacked and corners renewed; all edges gilt; red endpapers; in marbled paper-covered leather-entry slip case. Ford 135; Sabin 25596

Printed with Observations sur les Sauvages du Nord de l'Amerique, which, according to Ford, was only printed in some copies.

This edition by Antoine-François Quétant (1733-1823) was not the first French translation of some of Franklin’s writings. In 1773, Jacques Barbeu-Dubourg (1709-1779) published a translation of some of Franklin’s works, as Œuvres de M. Franklin, Docteur es Loix, but in 1777, Quétant published a new translation of The Way to Wealth as La Science du Bonhomme Richard, ou Moyen facile de payer les impôts.
