Springland, near Bristol, Pennsylvania: W. Birch, January, 1803 (but, William H. Morgan, 1820). Third State (of three). Hand-colored engraving, by Samuel Seymour, after a painting by William Birch. 21 15/16 x 28 5/8 in. (557 x 727 mm). Mat burn; unevenly toned; 10 1/2 inch crease from printer's error traversing from bottom left corner into image; bottom right and top left edges worn and chipped; scattered repairs and short closed tears along all edges. In mat and in frame, 31 1/2 x 35 in. (800 x 889 mm). Deak 245

The popularity of William Birch's famous portfolio of Philadelphia views "The City of Philadelphia", prompted him to consider making a similar set of views of New York City. He created this large format view to promote the new venture, intending it "as elegant furniture for a drawing or setting room", but due to financial concerns the portfolio was never executed. William H. Morgan acquired the plate around 1820 and reprinted it.
