Lot Description

[Prints] Audubon, John James Great American Shrike or Butcher Bird

London: R. Havell, 1834. Hand-colored engraving with aquatint and etching; on J. Whatman watermarked paper, dated 1834. Engraved, printed, and colored by R. Havell after J.J. Audubon’s watercolor. Elephant folio, 38 1/8 x 25 1/4 in. (97 x 64 cm). Scattered light soiling in margins, a few short closed tears in same; small chip, top right corner; small ink stamp on verso. In mat and in frame, 42 3/4 x 34 in. (108 x 86 cm).

Plate CXCII from Audubon's The Birds of America (London, 1827-38). A lovely example.
