[Native-Americana] Poole, Captain D.C. Among the Sioux of Dakota...

New York: D. Van Nostrand, 1881. First edition. 8vo. 235 pp. Contemporary three-quarter polished tan calf, over tan linen-covered boards, stamped in gilt, red and green morocco spine labels, front board starting, joints and extremities rubbed; top edge gilt, other edges trimmed; marbled endpapers; ownership signature of M. William Bradley, Philadelphia, at head of title-page, scattered marginalia by him throughout, sometimes providing critical commentary of the present text, while also providing personal reflections. Howes P-470

Captain DeWitt Clinton Poole's memoir of his role as an Indian Agent for the United States government, while stationed at a Sioux reservation at Whetstone Agency, near Yankton, in the Dakota Territory. His memoir reflects a time of forced social and cultural change for many groups of indigenous peoples, and is an early account of life on a reservation.

First copy at auction since 1961.
