Captain DeWitt Clinton Poole's memoir of his role as an Indian Agent for the United States government, while stationed at a Sioux reservation at Whetstone Agency, near Yankton, in the Dakota Territory. His memoir reflects a time of forced social and cultural change for many groups of indigenous peoples, and is an early account of life on a reservation.
