Newly discovered letter to "Seth Pecksniff"

Doughty Street, (London), Wednesday, no date (ca. 1839-49). One sheet, 7 1/4 x 4 1/2 in. (184 x 114 mm). Autograph letter, signed by Dickens to writer and journalist, S(amuel).C(arter). Hall, Esquire: "My Dear Sir/Thanks for the art union and/for the 'liberty.' I shall be delighted/to have you in my party at the artist's/Fund--which consists of the enormous/number of two, and joins George/Cruikshank's. I enclose you a ticket/to that good end./With kindest regards to Mrs. Hall,/believe me always/Faithfully yours/Charles Dickens/S.C. Hall Esquire/Doughty Street/Wednesday." Excised from scrapbook, with stub mounted along left side; creasing from original folds.

Samuel Carter Hall (1800-89) was a an Irish-born journalist and writer, known for his work as the editor for The Art Journal, from 1839-80, (named The Art Union until 1849). His personality was memorably satirized in the character of Seth Pecksniff in Dickens's Martin Chuzzlewit (1842-44).
