Lot Description

[Literature] Cervantes de Saavedra, Miguel The Life and Exploits of the ingenious gentleman Don Quixote de la Mancha

London: J. and R. Tonson, 1742. In two volumes. First edition of the Charles Jarvis (sic) translation (without Supplement to the Translator's Preface by William Warburton bound into first volume). 4to. xxxi, vi, (ii), 90, (12), 355; xii, 388 pp. Translated from the original Spanish by Charles Jervas. Illustrated with engraved frontispiece in first volume, and 68 plates throughout each volume, mostly by Gerard van der Gucht after John Vanderbank, including an engraved portrait of Cervantes by George Vertue. Full red marbled calf, stamped in gilt, brown morocco spine labels, joints lightly rubbed, spines slightly dry and blistered; all edge gilt; gilt dentelles; by Riviere & Son; frontispiece skillfully repaired in first volume, tidemark in upper fore-edge of pp. 317-329 in same.

A lovely set of Irish painter and translator Charle Jervas's (printed here as "Jarvis" due to a printer's error) Don Quixote, considered the most faithful English translation at the time of it's publication.
