Lot Description

[Presidential] Jackson, Andrew Autograph note, initialed

No place, October 11, 1836. Autograph note, initialed twice by Andrew Jackson, as President, "Commerical agent/& corresponding secretary/Major McNeil, topographicol (sic)/staff if not already let him/be ordered to his topographi/col (sic) duty on the north western/frontier--A.J.____/Oct 11th 1836/A.J." Mounted to a larger sheet removed from a scrapbook, 14 1/4 x 10 3/8 in. (362 x 263 mm). Unrelated autograph letter in an undetermined [French] hand, mounted at bottom of same sheet, but not affecting Jackson's note.

W.J. McNeil was an engineer, who, alongside future president Zachary Taylor, was appointed by President Jackson to survey the Northwestern Frontier for the building of frontier defenses and roads.
