Camp at Camargo, (Tamaulipas, Mexico), August 29, 1846. MS. receipt in a secretarial hand, signed by Ulysses S. Grant ("U.S. Grant/2nd Lt. 4th Infy/a.a.q.m."), as 2nd Lieutenant of the 4th Infantry, during the Mexican-American War, for "17. Seventeen Pairs of Laced Boots" turned over to Lieutenant J(enks). Beaman. Horizontal crease along top, presumably from when originally folded. 4 1/8 x 8 in. (105 x 203 mm).

It was here at Camp Camargo, in Tamaulipus, Mexico, that General Zachary Taylor established headquarters for the Army of Occupation, as they prepared for the Battle of Monterrey (September 21–24, 1846).

A rare and early document signed by future president Ulysses S. Grant during his service in the Mexican-American War. We can locate only one other similar document in the auction record.
