[Illuminated Manuscripts] Eighteenth-Century Patent of Nobility

March 17, 1733. Folio. Nine vellum leaves. Patent of nobility, in Latin, issued to Antonio Alberto Bormastino of Bormio, Italy, issued by Johannes Antonius Angelus Flavius (Comnenus Lascaris Palaeologus), supposed claimant to the throne of the Byzantine Empire, as descendant of the Angelos and Palaiologoi dynasties. Elaborately designed entirely in MS., and illustrated with one full-page coat of arms (p. 13), one small miniature (p. 8), numerous highly flourished initials, small vignette scene and elaborately flourished borders on first page. Full limp vellum wrappers; front wrapper excised; scattered soiling; final leaf creased.
