CALLIGRAPHY IN RUNNING SCRIPT In three lines, ink on paper, two seals lower left, one upper right, mounted as a hanging scroll, Japanese wood box. NOTE: Kameda Bosai was one of the most important calligraphers of the late Edo period in Japan. As a teacher of the Chinese classics, painter in literati style, and poet, Bosai was an important member among a group of artists inspired by Chinese scholarly culture. His literary and calligraphy skills were often called upon for prefaces to published works, dedications, and private commissions. The present work beautifully illustrates the elegance and energy of his brush.
