Lot Description

A rare and impressive Japanese patinated bronze censer and cover with original wood stand, Miyao Meiji period, late 19th century

The body of bellied rectangular section, the sides molded in low relief with various figural scenes, flanked by sinuous dragon-form handles, the domed cover surmounted by a shishi finial with brocade ball, the base supported by four muscular oni, three cartouches, one inscribed Miyao, the surface of deep chestnut-brown, details picked out in a reddish gold; the wood stand on sturdy cabriole legs, decorated with phoenix among karakusa scrolls in gold lacquer. NOTE: The Miyao company was particularly known for their impressive, finely executed and patinated figural sculptures. While larger pieces are known, the typical examples offered on the open market tend to be smaller and less complex. Compare the figural censer 64cm high, sold at Christie's London, May 18, 2012, lot 25. Compare also the figural censer sold at Christie's New York, September 15, 2010 lot 622, 27 in. high including wood base.

H: 27 in., W: 22 in., D: 11 in. (censer); H:11 7/8 in., W: 19 in.; D: 16 1/2 in. (stand)
