First American edition. 8vo. xvi, 399, (1); 367, (1); 420 pp. From the library of General Marquis de Lafayette and with his signed library label tipped in at half-title of first volume, and signed by a later and presumed descendant of General Lafayette, "Lafayette de Beaumont," on first free leaf of same. Illustrated with three large folding maps (two hand-colored). Quarter polished brown calf, stamped in gilt, over marbled paper-covered boards, joints rubbed, small chipping to spines, crack to front board of third volume, a few small holes at front joint of same; marbled edges; marbled endpapers; small open tear at pp. 255/256 in first volume, scattered minor spotting to text in each volume. BAL 10124.
