Lot Description

[Literature] Haggard, H. Rider She, a History of Adventure

London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1887. Seventh edition. 8vo. (viii), 317, 18 (ads) pp. Inscribed by Haggard on half-title: "To/Mrs. Traguiar/with the authors/compliments/1887". Illustrated with two color plates. Original dark blue-green cloth, stamped in gilt, spine lightly browned, spine ends and corners lightly worn; all edges trimmed; gutter lightly worn at half-title; in fall-down-back box. Together with: Autograph Letter, signed (London), 14. Dec, 1887. 8vo. 4pp. A.L.s. from Haggard to a Mrs. Traguiar (recipient of above volume), discussing an artwork by Mrs. Traguiar, and its possible inclusion in a future work by Haggard. In an aside, Haggard philosophizes about the limits of language and the role of art: "...I don't think what you say is nonsense at all -- but these things are so difficult to put into words. Language was made to deal with things material -- it fails when applied to things spiritual, there art steps in." Creasing from original folds.
