"Head-Quarters" [Newburgh, New York]: June 9, 1783. 1 1/4 pp. Printed document signed by General and Commander in Chief of the Forces of the United States Army "Go: Washington", countersigned by Jonathan Trumbull, Jr., aide-de-camp to Washington during the Revolutionary War, and by James Bradford as adjutant, authorizing the discharge of John Thayne, Matross from the American Army. Partially printed, completed by a secretarial hand. Edges lightly worn and unevenly toned, moderate creasing from old folds, one crease traversing Washington's signature. In frame. In part: "These are to certify that the Bearer herof John Thayne Matross in the 1st NYork Artillery Regiment, having faithfully served the United States from the 9th August 1781 till the present period and and being enlisted for the War only, hereby discharged from the American Army."
