Cather, then an editor at McClure's Magazine, writes to African-American poet, anthologist, and literary scholar, William Stanley Braithwaite, concerning the authorship of the poem "Love of Friend." In it she reveals American poet Louise Imogen Guiney to be the author, and suggests that proper authorship be given. The poem was to be included in an anthology of Magazine Verse for the year 1910, edited by Braithwaite.
