Lot Description

[Literature] Conrad, Joseph Memorial Edition, Collected Works of Joseph Conrad

Garden City, New York: Doubleday, Page & Company, 1925-1926. In 23 volumes. First and limited edition, one of only 99 sets signed by Conrad. Originally planned as an edition of 377, Conrad died suddenly after signing only 99. The publishers then re-imagined the set as a memorial edition and printed a new limitation leaf, thus #30/499 numbered sets. The originally limitation leaf (of 377) is unnumbered, but signed; the additional limitation leaf is numbered 30 of 499. Each volume illustrated with an engraved frontispiece. Bound in original white faux-vellum; decoratively stamped in gilt; top edge gilt, other edges untrimmed; in original off-white glassine and original green dust-jacket. Dent and small tear to the front cover corner of volume IX, and some minor off-setting to same; otherwise a beautifully preserved and rare set.
