Ian Berry joined Magnum Photos, a cooperative of documentary photographers, in 1962. This photograph was taken during the week of Bobby Sands's death. Sands was a Provisional IRA member, Member of Parliament, and leader of hundreds of prisoners in the Maze Prison, Belfast, where he died following a 66-day hunger strike.
