Lot Description

WILSON A. BENTLEY (AMERICAN, 1865–1931) TWO PHOTOGRAPHIC STUDIES OF SNOW CRYSTALS

Ca. 1903-1910. Each mounted to an embossed board, with notes in pencil in an unknown hand on verso. Gold-toned gelatin silver prints.
Images: approximately 2 7/8 x 3 in. (7.3 x 7.6cm) (oval) and 2 5/8 x 2 1/8 in. (6.7 x 5.4cm) (oval).
Sheets: approximately 5 x 5 in. (12.7 x 12.7cm) each.

Wilson A. Bentley was a pioneer of photomicrography, a process which allowed him to take photos of individual snowflakes. He photographed 5,000 snowflakes between 1885 and 1931, when he died from pneumonia he had contracted while walking through a blizzard.
