Lotte Jacobi, an established portrait photographer in Germany, fled the Nazis and opened a studio in New York, which she ran until 1955. In the 1950s, her work shifted from portraits to more abstract "cameraless photographs", made by placing in glass or cellophane in front of a flashlight positioned above a piece of photographic paper.
