Scrimshaw walrus tusk cribbage board Candle City, AK, circa 1900
The sides decorated with walruses, bears, and a reindeer-driven sled with rider, the ends carved as walrus heads; with handwritten note to reverse of business card for R. Amos Sargent/U.S. Steam Vessel Inspection Service, Philadelphia, PA, "This tusk was engraved by an Eskimo chief by the name of U-mak-to-lik in Candle City, Kotzebue Sound, Alaska in Dec. 1900. In this place there is a friends mission from Los Angeles, Cal. and a Presbyterian mission. Kotzebue (?) Town is about 120 miles N of Cape Prince of Wales, Bering Strait."
