Lot Description

A Large Chinese painted, gessoed and gilt fresco panel Ming dynasty

Depicting a central female bodhisattva or celestial entity, wearing a phoenix crown and patterned silk robes, surrounded by a panoply of female attendants bearing various treasues, a phoenix above, all among scrolling clouds, with gilt gesso ornaments and details in low relief, later Chinese black-enameled frame. NOTE: Albert Bender (1866-1941) was a prominant San Francisco art collector and philanthropist, most active in the 1920s and 1930s. An enthusiast of Asian Art, he donated many works to San Francisco area museums and educational institutions, as well as to the National Museum of Ireland, Dublin. Bender was also a supporter of contemporary artists such as Ansel Adams and Diego Rivera.
