Lot Description

A Chinese partly-glazed stoneware jar and cover Han dynasty

The globular body with three raised horizontal rows of doubled lines, the upper enclosed bands incised with stylized scrolls, the shoulders flanked by two flat taotie mask handles, the slightly domed cover incised with concentric lines, cover and shoulders with a thin pale olive-green glaze except for the lower portion of the body, burned brownish red in firing. The results of Chinese University of Hong Kong thermoluminescence test, #M350, dated December 6, 2000, are stated to be consistant with suggested date of manufacture. NOTE: Compare a similar jar, but lacking a cover, from the Arthur M. Sackler Collections, illustrated and discussed in Yutaka Mino and Katherine R. Tsiang, "Ice and Green Clouds, Traditions of Chinese Celadon", Indianapolis, 1986, pp.54-55, no. 14.
