Lot Description

A Chinese marble-inset hardwood armchair Qing dynasty, circa 1800-1850

The rectangular backrest with vertical splat, inset with a central grey and white marble plaque, a panel above and below with oval, beaded aperture, above a woven seat and angular arms, the supports of circular section, box stretcher, with straight, circular legs, the dense timber with fine figure and of reddish-brown tone. Accompanied by a note from Reverend O. H. White, written circa 1974: "This will certify that this Chinese armchair in rosewood was bro't from China in the last century by Capt. Wheelock whose collection of orientalia was one of the best in Canada. At that time it was considered a very old chair, and it is dated c. 1825. I certify this is the information given me at time of purchase, and to the best of my knowledge and understand, it is accurate". Rev. O. H. White".
