Calhoun, Secretary of War, requesting that a military officer be transferred to a post closer to "his aged parents." Also signed by two others. Washington, April 7, 1848 - 1 p., 4to. As Secretary of State to W.L. Marcy, Secretary of War, recommending a promotion for Horace Haldeman, "...[He] left a most agreeable and profitable position in life purely for patriotic duty... has acquitted himself with honor in Mexico, &... would make an excellent officer..." Wheatland, near Lancaster, June 18, 1849 - 2 pp. on one 4to sheet. To John Y. Mason, advising him on financial matters.
