Lot Description
Framed floral silk brocade dress fragment and needlework sampler of Dolly Madison, Washington and Clemson Family interest Southern States, early 19th century
The fragment purportedly from Dolly Madison's wedding dress, accompanied by a letter, dated May 1911, "Dear Martha, Had to go to ... got our piece of Mrs. Madison's wedding dress and mother's sampler done when she was 11. Mrs. M. was a cousin of your grandfather Washington. He gave piece to dear mother--love to all ... Kate," the sampler worked with multicolored threads on linen ground, accompanied by typewritten note, "Sampler done by Elizabeth Clemson Neilson at age 11. (Sister of Louisa Clemson Washington, Catherine Clemson North, John Baker Clemson D.D. and Thomas Clemson who founded Clemson Univ. in South Carolina, and Married John C. Calhoun's daughter."
