Mrs. M. was a cousin of your grandfather Washington. He gave piece to dear mother--love to all ... Kate," the sampler worked with multicolored threads on linen ground, accompanied by typewritten note, "Sampler done by Elizabeth Clemson Neilson at age 11. (Sister of Louisa Clemson Washington, Catherine Clemson North, John Baker Clemson D.D. and Thomas Clemson who founded Clemson Univ. in South Carolina, and Married John C. Calhoun's daughter."
