Lot Description
Two early Cunard Line "Boston Mails" ironstone transferware dinner plates james & thomas edwards, burslem, england, circa 1841
In the brown color scheme, the center of each plate illustrating interior scenes typical of Boston Mails China: the larger plate showing a view of the Ladies Cabin and the smaller plate depicting a view of the Gentlemens Cabin; the edge of each plate with cartouches featuring all four ships in the Cunard Line: Acadia, Columbia, Caledonia, and Britannia; both plates with transferprinted stamps to undersides, the larger plate with the standard "Boston Mails" and ship mark and the smaller plate with the less widely seen mark showing a ship, "Boston Mails," and the inscription "Entered at the Registry Office of Designs Sep. 2nd 1841/J & T Edwards."
