Lot Description

A fine and impressive Louis XVI style ormolu and enameled bronze mounted fruitwood marquetry and parquetry mahogany armoire the mounts by Jean Rabiant, late 19th/early 20th century

After the design by Jean-Henri Riesener (German/French, 1734-1806) for the commode for La Chambre de Louis XVI à Versailles, with cavetto cornice above central mirrored cabinet door ormolu banded and surmounted by a sun-in-splendour applique, flanked by beaded pilasters headed by classical busts; the sides with demilune parquetry and floral marquetry doors mounted with ormolu banding and appliques representing allegories of music hung from ribbon-tied garlands; the base centered by ormolu cornucopia surrounding a cobalt blue enabled globe mounted with fleurs-de-lys and signed to verso "JRA" and with inventory number.
