Lot Description

A Japanese lacquer picnic set, jubako 18th/19th century

The case in the form of conjoined octagons, one side with a four tier picnic box, below a shelf with shallow octagonal tray, the tray decorated with three Chinese boys pulling a cart of flowers, the other side of the case with a single octagonal box containing a shallow sake dish (possibly associated), below a scroll-engraved silver metal double-gourd covered bottle, the lacquer decorated with trees and flowers among rockwork and waves, the sides with ho-o birds and various flowers, scattered floriform mon, various diaper borders.
