Lot Description

(Maps & Atlases : T...

(Maps & Atlases : Terrarum Orbis Geographica) 1 Vol. Composite Atlas and Manuscript Cartographical Treatise. (n.p.), 1658 (terminus post quem). 4to. Old gilt-paneled calf, gilt spine compartments, marbled endpapers; spine cover chipped, joints tender but quires restored presumably ca early 20th century. Houses 33 hand-colored copper-engraved plates by N. Sanson; treatise itself divided into two parts (pp. 1-73) and (pp. 1-29), each with separate engraved title page and manuscript title in ink "descriptio africae" and "descriptio americae," respectively. Neo-latinate text and pagination in brown ink, toned throughout with some bleed-through not at all affecting legibility. Ptolemaic in form and content; clearly a redacted, epitomated rewriting of Sanson's own text. Pedagogical use highly likely. "descriptio Africae" borrows 18 fold-maps from Sanson's 1656 "L'Afrique", albeit deviating from the published sequence there; "descriptio americae" consists in 15 maps from the 1657 "L'Amerique", and includes the noteworthy California qua island "audience de gaudalajara, nouveau mexique, californie, &c" (this latter approximately 240 x 210 mm, upper and lower margins trimmed to plate mark).
