(American Manuscripts & Autographs) Lot. (Autograph material & c.). Robert E. Lee: Lee, R(obert) E. Autograph Letter Signed. Dabbs House [Henrico County, Virginia], June 24, 1862. 1 page, 4to. To [Judge] G(eorge) W(ashington) Lewis, relating to Judge Lewis' son, Henry Bankhead Lewis, missing in action after the Battle of Seven Pines [part of the successful Confederate campaign to defend Richmond, also resulting in Lee's assumption of command of the Army of Northern Virginia], "I have received your note of this morning. I have examined the list of prisoners taken by the enemy... but cannot find the name of your son... Should any information of your son reach me, I will forward it to you with pleasure. I enclosed the pass... desired. Only good for tomorrow." * Lee, R(obert) E. Autograph Document Signed. Headquarters, Dabbs House, June 25, 1862. 1 page, 3 3/4 x 7 7/8 inches; 92 x 195 mm. Military pass for G(eorge) W(ashington) Lewis and several others.
Both of the above a little faded but completely legible, both mounted on the same leaf of a Lewis family scrapbook. With marginal ink annotation on the mount in the hand of one of Judge Lewis' children. Lot also includes the postal envelope addressed to G W Lewis in which, presumably, the Lee letter and pass above were sent; with Judge Lewis' ink annotation on the front panel of the envelope noting the contents of the letter, "Genl. R E Lee in relation to my son..." * Lot also includes later printings of photo portraits of George Washington Lewis, Henry Bankhead Lewis (August 8, 1831 - May 31, 1862), and Robert E. Lee.
