Lot Description
Oval portrait on ivory of Sir Augustus Frederick d'Este, KCH (1794–1848) in a gold and red collar and sash, gold epaulettes and blue coat before a curtain partially lifted to show a monument, signed "Rochard", the verso signed "Portrait de/Frederick Augustus/D'este/Fils d'un ?/le Duc de Sussex", in gilt bronze frame. Note: Sir Augustus Frederick d'Este, KCH (1794–1848) was the son of Prince Augustus Frederick, Duke of Sussex, and Lady Augusta Murray, and the grandson of George III. His parents' marriage was in contravention of the Royal Marriages Act 1772 and thus legally null and void. Therefore, Augustus d'Este was illegitimate for purposes of British law.
