Lot Description

Rare and important cased set of George II silver caddies Paul de Lamerie, London, 1736-37

Comprising two tea caddies and a larger sugar box, each oblong with re-entrant corners and sliding covers, repousséd and chased to show an eagle amongst rocaille scrolls, flowers, and a tree stump, the sides with putto surrounded by rocaille shells and flowers, the base engraved and chased to show shells and foliate scrolls, each body with later engraved griffin crest for the Finch family and monograms within cartouches, each fully marked and with scratch weights to underside, the sliding covers with engraved initials "G" for green tea, "B" for Bohea tea, and "S" for sugar, and apparently unmarked, in silver-mounted ebony veneered casket marked for John Harvey I or Thomas Heming, circa 1750-70.
