Italian carved gilt gesso pastiglia and polychrome painted cassone probably Venice, first half 16th century and later
The planked rectangular top centered by an armorial incorporating a shield with two rampant lions and the fleur-de-lis of Florence, surmounted by a crown and surrounded by leafy scrolls, the top further decorated in pastiglia to show raised scrolls and an armorial rampant lion at one end and an eagle at the other, the front centered by the Medici armorial depicting five balls in orle gules, the sides further decorated in pastiglia to show scrolls and figures, on shaped plinth base.
