Lot Description

German two-hand processional sword, landsknecht circa 1580, contemporary copy of the sword of the Guard of Julius, Duke of Brunswick

Straight double edged blade with rectangular ricasso issuing down turned side-lugs, the iron hilt with a pair of flattened quillons engraved with foliate scrolls and centered by a pair of fish heads issuing down-turned terminals curled in opposite directions, joined to further flattened and curved volutes, and engraved ring-guards, each filled with a plate, the wooden grip divided into five sections and studded with linear patterns of iron nails, bearing some remnants of original fabric covering, the plummet shaped pommel divided into six foliate sections and surmounted by a flattened button.
