Worked with silk and chenille threads, watercolor and ink on a silk ground, label on verso identifies maker, "Portrait of Maria Lloyd Smith at nineteen years of age, and her own work while in boarding school in New York City, which she attended for four years. She was a fine musician, linguist and needle woman. Mother of F. M. Hanna, grandmother of Edith Williams."
