Lot Description

Group of eight painted cast iron mechanical banks most manufactured by j. & e. stevens company, cromwell, ct, late 19th century

Comprising a Two Frogs bank, circa 1882, designed by James H. Brown, the underside impressed "Pat Apld For" and the coin trap marked, "Pat Feb 2 1875"; a "Dark Town Battery" bank, patented 1888, designed by James H. Bowen; two versions of the "I Always Did 'Spise a Mule" bank, the first with boy seated in front of mule, impressed to underside, "Patd Apr 22d 1879" and the second with jockey riding mule, impressed, "Patd Apr 27 1897"; a Jolly "N" bank with moving eyes; two Tammany banks, designed by John Hall, each impressed to back of chair, "Patd Dec 23 1873," one with coin trap impressed, "Patd June 8 1875"; and an Organ Bank, by Kyser and Rex Company, Philadelphia, with seated monkey flanked by standing figures of cat and dog, impressed to back, "Pat June 13 1882."
