Hand-painted window shade pennsylvania, second half 19th century
Oil on cloth, the foreground painted to show a gentleman issuing money to three workers queued up in front of a building entitled "Carpenters and Builders," the background with a building flying an American flag and a policeman catching a pickpocket in front of a fortification, the whole affixed to a cylindrical wooden roller bearing a label for "Sawyer & Buckley's patent central bored Improved Stop Shade Roller," patented 1877, 1878, 1879, & 1883.
