With half-titles, engraved & letterpress titles, 270 plates & maps. Scattered light foxing, generally clean & crisp. 2nd 4to issue. Presentation copy inscr to Captain A[miel] W[eeks] Whipple on front pastedown by Schoolcraft (vols 1-3), G[eorge] W[ashington] Manypenny, Director of the Bureau of Indian Affairs (vol 4) & the acting director (vol 5).
A.W. Whipple, 1818-1863, American military engineer & surveyor, published from 1855-1857 the Exploration and Surveys...for a Railroad from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean, mortally wounded as brigade general at the Battle of Chancellorsville.
