Lot Description

Fine French gold and enamel topographical snuff box circa 1850

Oval, the lid painted to show a mountainous lake scene at dawn with trees in the foreground, the transparent pink enamel over the sky reflecting to simulate sun rays, the border composed of green strapwork with intervals of white, surrounding a champlevé pink ground with gold scrolls, the sides and underside with cobalt blue guilloché reserves within similarly worked florals and strapwork, the flange struck with French guarantee mark, maker's mark within a lozenge (indistinct), and the number 141, the back of the hinge with post 1838 eagle guarantee mark.
