Lot Description

Large French and Indian War engraved powder horn inscribed, "hugh maclain," circa 1760

With a fluted and notch-carved spout, the body inscribed at near end, "Hugh Maclain," and engraved with the British coat-of-arms; a map of New York and Northeastern rivers, cities and forts; and scattered devices including a smiling sun, moon, a turkey-like bird, dragon and figures of an Indian with a raised tomahawk and a Highlander with bonnet, kilt and knee-high stockings with a raised sword; identified place names include: New York, Albany, Amboy, "Shenaktady," Long Island, "Rhod Island" and Forts Johnson, Hunter, "Stillwrs," with other places initialized. The date "1702" is a later inscription.
