Fort Donaldson, (Tennesse), Feb. 26, 1862. 2pp on 1 4to sheet; light to moderate creases along old folds - a few short separations - negligible paper loss. To his wife "Dear Julia." Written ten days after Grant led the Union to his first major victory of the Civil War, after which Lincoln promoted him to Major General. "...Since my promotion some changes may take place in my command...I want forever to remain in the field & be actively employed...[if] a command inferior to my rank is given me it shall make no difference in my zeal. Inspite of enemies I have so far progressed satisfactarily to myself & the country.."
