[c1820/30s] Letters compiled from the years 1809-1815. 4to, orig. marbled bds with paper label 'New England Conspiracy' in Carey's hand; worn. Approx 145pp of manuscript leaves and index. Pages a little toned, wear to edges. Copies of letters written to John Adams, Editors of the Boston Patriot, Levi Lincoln, James Madison, James Monroe, Niles Hezechial etc. To James Madison, "Your predecessor [Thomas Jefferson] has brought the commonwealth to the very jaws of destruction. Whether through __, timidity or enthusiasms is unimportant, as it _ the problem. It may indeed affect his character in posterity....Treason - treason has walked through the land for two or three years in all the glare of day." & "Feb. 16, 1809, To the citizens of the United States, As the present crisis of our affairs it behoves every good citizen to contribute his emotions. To rescue his country from impending ruin. We have domestic treason, as well as foreign hostility to dread. No national man can disbelieve this who takes even the slightest view of the proceedings in Massachusetts, & of the proposition brought forward elsewhere, separate the union, & make the Patomac the boundry of the new Confederacies.
