The present work was inspired by Dmitri Shostakovich's 1903 opera of the same title, which Mr. Kentridge directed and designed for New York's Metropolitan Opera in 2010. At the artist's request, half of this edition was sold to benefit The Market Theatre in Johannesburg, South Africa, which challenged the notion and leaders of apartheid beginning in the 1970's.
