Lot Description

Large Continental polychrome painted terracotta triptych altarpiece possibly low countries, 19th century or earlier

In three panels, the central panel carved to show the crowned Virgin with the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove, and bursting rays above her, beside her is the motto "Ales vos avers pers et organs" flanked by a figure of a knight on one side and an apostle on the other, the two flanking panels carved to show figures of a Monk and St. John the Baptist, all under Gothic tracery, remnants of old polychrome, old Brooklyn Museum label to verso, accession number 19.68 to one corner.
