Lot Description

Fine and important Italian micromosaic of Pope Pius VII vatican workshop, circa 1820

Signed 'Raf. Castellini F.' for Raphael Castellini, depicting the subject in a 3/4 portrait pose wearing a red cape edged with white fur, in an ebonized frame.
Note: The present lot relates to a number of similar micromosaics produced by the Vatican Studios in the second quarter of the 19th century by various micromosaic artists and presented by the Papal Authority as diplomatic gifts. A smaller example in a more elaborate frame and signed Vincenzo Verdejo, sold Christie's, New York, April 2006, lot 28, and another micromosaic of Pius VII signed by Vincenzo Verdejo is illustrated in Domenico Petochi, I Mosaici Minuti Romani, 1981, p. 127, fig. 53.
