Lot Description

George III 'Gothic' mahogany hanging cabinet circa 1760

The rectangular case with a carved straight molded cornice with corner finials over a glazed door with carved foliate corners flanked by 3/4 ring-turned corner columns, opening to a lined shelf interior; above a carved apron and quatrefoil tracery bracket.

Note:
Thomas Chippendale included designs "in the Gothic, Chinese, and Modern Taste" in his 'Director'. Though not slavish copies of true Gothic elements, Chippendale interpreted the pointed tracery, crockets and ogee arches into his designs for chairs, bookcases, and tables. One of the most noted proponents of these new decorative motifs was Horace Walpole, whose lavish Strawberry Hill in Twickenham, outside London, became one of the earliest 18th century homes to embrace the Gothic Revival.

H: 27, W: 15, D: 5 in.
