First edition. 4to, contemp. calf; worn, rubbed & blistered, front covers detached (but present). Frontis. portrait. Toning & offsetting affecting vol. 1 title. Light to moderate foxing, several quires somewhat browned. Horizontal tear in front free endpaper of vol. 2. complete with 1/2 titles.
Henry Laurens's copy, signed by him at head of title pages. Signed & inscribed by Henry Laurens's son on front fly leaves, "John B. Laurens / presented to him by / his father, Henry Laurens."
Laurens, Henry (b. Charleston, S.C., 1724; d. South Carolina, 1792). Leader of the American Revolutionary movement in The South, served in the Continental Congress, part of the time as President.
Laurens, John (b. Charleston, S.C., 1754; d. South Carolina, 1782). Revolutionary War soldier, diplomat, served on a military mission to France, killed in skirmish against British partisans.
