Rimmer, William. Art Anatomy. Boston: Little, Brown, 1877. Oblong folio, modern 1/2 maroon morocco & cloth, small portion of contemp. spine laid down, gilt-lettered front cover, a.e.g. With 80 plates. Internally clean. Sheet size 13 5/8 x 21 inches (346 x 533 mm).
As Leonard Baskin has written, "William Rimmer stands after Rush and Ward as the great American sculptor of the Nineteenth Century,… The Art Anatomy is so well known [from its offset reprint edition] that it would be useless for me to bespeak its qualities. It is a great artistic document of nineteenth-century American art." In his 1890 book on Rimmer, the sculptor Truman H. Bartlett has written, "In 1877 the artist published what in some respects was the most important work he ever executed, - his 'Art Anatomy.'… the work contains eighty pages of full illustrations, reproduced by the heliotype process, in red ink from pencil drawings… fifty copies of the work were published; and a few over half have been sold at fifty dollars each. One might suppose that such a work would at least have found a place in every public library in the land, as well as many private ones…"
